but blew up about three minutes into the flight, at the point when it was due to separate from its booster.
From what I heard and saw (on video), it was supposed to flip, then separate, but the flip just kept going on and on. It looked like they might have done a self-destruct.

Exactly! That was ~4 minutes of flight time with the ships spewing TONS of data. They’ll be processing it for weeks.
And the next one will be better. Remember all the failures of Falcon 9? And NOW look at it.

They blew it up when the boosters failed to separate at about 10 miles. Better to blow up before orbit because debris would have scattered over the earth instead on f staying local. This launch was a huge success!
