“Fleming became far more successful and important than he had ever been in public service.”
One of his jobs was organizing stay behind guerrilla forces in the event that the Germans Operation Sea Lion was successful. Of course, that didn’t happen so his efforts were never tested.
If you ever saw the movie “It Happened Here”, you’d see how things pretty much would have gone.
The author entirely misses the point about British style and charm. It's understated, but very precise, based upon clear deeply held principles. As WFB once wrote principles have sharp edges and cut deeply, and that is what the famous British wit does. Take the martini - shaken not stirred. It's simple and very very precise. Here is what it should be and here is what it is not. It's very different from the banality of the modern conceited foodie movement. There is no conceit about the Bond style that has bedazzled the world. It's a thing of its own essence. It defines itself. It just is. Like the style of the now to be rewritten PG Wodehouse.
Plus they all talked too much. They should have heeded Tuco’s advice.
Bond, as imagined by Ian Fleming, was supposed to be an ambivalent or ambiguous character. If you’re uncomfortable with Bond or with the actor playing Bond or with the Bond Movies, you’re supposed to be.
I saw the first “Casino Royale” when I was growing up. Loved that film.
they should just kill him in the first scene
then everybody can go home
My to do list includes re-reading his novels. I last read them in jr high. 50+ years ago. Would be interesting to see how much the movies diverge from the original novels.
The British pretty much invented modern SPECOPS with the SAS during WW2.
Haven’t watched a Bond movie in decades, just some clips online. They apparently continue the tradition of ridiculous stunts that are good for dumbing the average viewer:
The most recent I’ve seen was the high wing twin engine plane that loses the wings from outboard of the engines from striking trees, then becoming a prop driven snowmobile. And Bond has to keep a straight and serious face during such stupid scenes.
Cary Grant in North by Northwest was Bond before Bond.
Boodles Gin made in Warrington, Lancashire County, England, was the choice of Ian Fleming, Winston Churchill, and presumably James Bond. The largest USAF base during WWII (Burtonwood AFB) was nearby. Boodle’s Gin was served almost exclusively at the Boodles Gentleman’s Club, St. James, London. Martini, shaken not stirred..please.
I have a full collection of Bond movies.
But I like Sean Connery as the best bond.
Connery was in fact a pretty formidable guy: In one real life incident he was cornered by 6 gang members.
There, Connery singlehandedly launched an attack against the gang members, grabbing one by the throat and another by the biceps and cracking their heads together. From then on, he was treated with great respect by the gang and gained a reputation as a "hard man".

Diamonds Are Forever, From Russia With Love, and especially Goldfinger, all have "homophobic" passages, which are now also likely censored.
