I think "Soros" is a front for other financial powers who choose to remain anonymous.
The British Pound story is just an old chestnut they trot out to provide a plausible cover story (if you don't do the arithmetic) for the vast sums of money this "individual" funnels into political causes all over the world.
The pattern is the same as claiming Epstein obtained his wealth as a Wall Street investor, when no one in that community was familiar with him having any significant investment activity.
In both these cases, Epstein and Soros, a fictional financial biography was installed with the aid of media. The purpose was/is to hide the true sources of funds utilized in the intelligence game. In Soros' case at least, this includes attempting to seize control of foreign governments as surely as the CIA has ever done. Come to think of it, that's probably what Epstein was trying to accomplish as well.
