the tens of thousands of Russians killed by these US actions.

The total number of US dead in Afghanistan is 2,402. Not "tens of thousands."

If Russia truly believes we blew up their pipeline (whether true of not) they will at some point retaliate. They would, and rightfully so, consider that an act of war.

Precisely. The number of dead Russians due exclusively to US supplied weaponry, tens of thousands and counting rapidly. There is NO comparison between Russian involvement in Afghanistan and NATO’s in Ukraine. I believe you also mentioned Viet Nam. We sent 2 1/2 million men 10,000 miles, got 56,000 killed, responsible for the deaths of a million innocent locals and ravaged three countries for 13 years to prevent the first domino from falling. The Russians can’t react when the largest offensive military machine the world has ever seen is parked on their border, preaching Moscow regime change, a days tank ride from Moscow. You are surprised when the Russians make a move to prevent the VERY LAST domino from falling. That type short sightedness has brought us to the brink of a nuclear war.

Russian fears of NATO would be justified if and only if NATO had kept its full complement of troops in the 2000s and moved them to the new members in the east. In fact, the opposite happened: no troops were permanently stationed in any of the new NATO members and NATO militaries were downsized enormously. The Bundeswehr was effectively reduced to a border guard service and the US removed its last armored units from Germany.

It was precisely this weakness that induced Putin to attack in 2014 and again in 2022. Luckily for us Putin was deluded about Russia's military capabilities.

WWIII is already underway. It’s just not nuclear.

Yet.

Putin will be wanting bigger headlines than Poland.

No, of course the little German shadow play at Gleiwitz was a contrived farce.

BUT.

Germany and Poland could have negotiated a peace that involved restoration of some or all German territory annexed (West Prussia) or alienated (Danzig) in 1919 without war, but for British meddling which led the Poles to conclude (falsely) that they would be protected by a superior power if they took a hard line.

In line with my previous post, Poland had every right to take a hard line IF their analysis led them to believe they could stop Germany by force and thus did not need to negotiate.

They chose poorly.

After living in peace with the Russians for ten years, US involvement in NATO should have ended in the early 2000s for reasons all too apparent today.

I must have missed the part where we annexed Iraqi territory and looted its oil.

We're currently looting oil in Syria.

As I said, NATO's drawdown was reciprocated only with more Russian aggression.

Europe's defense problem hasn't changed in over a century: individual European powers are too weak to defend themselves against continental powers and no one European power can unite Europe.

Allowing all of Europe to fall into a "Eurasian" conglomeration would be a catastrophe for the US, so we're stuck with the current situation for the foreseeable future. Having a hissy fit and stomping our feet about it doesn't change the calculation.

We were talking about Iraq. You can't change the subject in the middle of an argument. Only my wife can do that.

And the only potential justification for invading Iraq and destroying its social, political, and military systems would have been to seize the oil.

In 1991, we should have asked Saddam to go all the way to Riyadh. It would have saved us enormous amounts of money, and tens of thousands of our best killed and maimed, all for nothing.

You tried to pretend that the US doesn't loot oil from Middle Eastern countries.

I played a little chin music for ya, and you don't like it.

Syria is hardly a state anymore: Turkey occupies part of it, the Kurds control a big chunk and are allied with the US, the Islamofascists control smaller parts. The US pumps oil to fund support for the Kurds fighting ISIS. If I were to guess, the Kurds control the oil and the US simply prevents the Syrian regime from regaining control.

Get back to me when the US loots everything from hundreds of thousands of tons of grain to washing machines, TV sets and toilets.

We will all know when World War three happens as we are vaporized by nuclear bombs.

Putin can end it in seconds.
All he has to do is withdraw and negotiate an end to the conflict. Presto....War over.

Trumps is useful because he would threaten both sides to the table. As this grinds on, and Ukraine builds forces for an offensive, Trump becomes less useful.

I have repeatedly stated that this is a stupid war, with stupid prizes. The interests of innocent people, it should have ended along time ago. I believe Biden, Obama, and the CIA provoked Russia, but Putin was stupid enough to take the bait. Still, ending is best for the world.

Russia invades a European country for the second time in 8 years, but the West is the real problem?==

Maybe because West has made this European country as a bastion against Russia. On Russian doorstep.

Just imagine mirror thing say in Mexico or Cuba and how will US react according Monro Doctrine?

Yeah the policy of West is a provocation which went to this war. Yes Russia can be provoked to a war. But it is guilt of provocateur not her.

Hardspunned — nope, WWIII is not starting and definitely not starting in Poland.

What you’re seeing now is the result of Moscow sending in armed troops into Ukraine in 2014.

this ain’t a world war as no one but Ukraine and Russia are involved and no one is coming to Russian military aid.

And no, Russia ain’t going to go to Poland — it’s already getting its butt kicked by Ukraine.

Russia is preparing for preemptive strikes on NATO’s staging areas in Poland.

Har de har har --> Russia attacks a NATO country and Russia then disintegrates. The Ruskis can barely manage Ukraine.
