Jefferson Davis and his government did want to break off all the slaveholding territories. That would have left Washington DC surrounded, Philadelphia threatened, and the Confederacy not far from Lake Erie and able to divide the US in half. It would also have subjected many Unionists to Confederate rule. The Confederacy also demanded all US property within their boundaries. Given those demands, war was probably unavoidable.

Secession isn't going to work. People are going to be crossing boundaries everyday and going through customs every day. Goods crossing the border will be held up, inspected, and taxed. The ports would all be in the hands of the blue counties. Red counties and blue counties will fight over land and resources, and the dividing lines will run through most counties, not between them. Red counties will develop industries of their own, reduplicating what already exists on the other side, and the more the red counties invite corporations in the more they become like the blue counties. The result will be a lower standard of living and more aggravation all around. We won't know how much we benefitted from being part of the United States until we have lost it.
