If you want to find a Virginia-class boat look for the quietest part of the ocean. I'm not sure the Russians could find one tied up to the pier.

Machinery noise is a world by itself. I wrote the first guideline to get the yards to standardize their test methods for repairing/re-building machinery. On some of the boats I worked on the biggest noise was the cook scraping a pan. And on quiet ops they had to save their terlet flushes. Does make it hard to find that “hole in the water.”
