The friggan idiots!
Went and visited the Long Valley Caldera last fall and ran into a couple guys taking samples there for the USGS keeping an eye on that one.
I had a nice discussion with those kids. Managed to give them a little info on the Midcontinent rift or Keweenawan Rift which they had heard of, but never got a chance to really read up on it. The study of geology is so vast that one has to concentrate on a specific thing and try to gather “some” information on other things as one goes along.
It was right about the time the minor earthquakes were hitting OK and TX. We all agreed that since that rift is still rebounding from the glaciers, that earthquakes will most likely occur for century’s along that region.
Up at Eagle Harbor in the UP of Michigan, you can stand on the exposed crust of the earth, meaning if you try and dig to get under that rock, you wont be able to, it IS the earths crust. Not sediment, but the actual crust. It just happens to be very thick.
And low and behold..a while ago one of these panic punks put up a click bait post on youtube claiming a hot spot under that crust. YA there was! Over a billion years ago!
