I remember reading several years ago that some temp sensors were placed near parking lots which gave higher temp readings causing bad data.

I never heard the final result, but soon after publishing the poor siting of some of the official weather service monitoring stations Watts started planning a nationwide assessment of every station. The location of each would be verified (because many had been moved without recording the new location), the area around it would be evaluated to see if it followed placement rules and pictures would be taken. Very quickly the government took down the list of sites for "privacy" reasons.
