One of by uncles was wounded at Guadalcanal, and recovered.
Another was at Iwo Jima, but surprisingly wasn’t injured. He saw the initial flag-raising on Mount Suribachi.

I had two uncles who fought the Germans. Uncle George was in the Army and fought in the horrific battle of Monte Casino. His brother, my uncle Joe, was a Seabee, and was on a ship that was sunk in the Atlantic. He survived and was rescued after two days in the water. He passed away three years ago. He was 100 years old.
