Demolition of Seacliff State Beach pier, a cherished Santa Cruz landmark, begins

The dock to the 'cement ship' in Aptos, California, was damaged in this year's severe storms

Crews arrived Monday with excavators and a crane to begin the multiweek process of demolishing the pier that connected a Santa Cruz County town with its cherished “cement ship” for nearly a century but could not withstand the impact of the destructive 2023 California storms.

The pier was a major attraction for outsiders to visit Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, California. It was built in 1930 to allow visitors to walk out to the SS Palo Alto, a permanently stationed amusement ship, but faced irreparable damage during a major storm Jan. 5.

Waves from the winter storm disconnected the pier from the ship and battered the wooden structure to “a state of imminent collapse,” according to California State Parks.

An effort is underway to preserve the lifeguard tower and memorial benches. A member of the Aptos community emergency response team shared on Twitter that crews were removing the benches before addressing the lifeguard tower.

The Aptos community has always celebrated the pier and its adjoining vessel, which is nicknamed the “cement” ship — even though the SS Palo Alto is made of concrete.

Kevin Newhouse is a historian with the Aptos History Museum and authored a book on the coastal town in 2013. He told SFGATE the landmarks are crucial for the town, both as tourist attractions and to provide access for locals.

Time for a rebuild.

Plan for the environmental impact report to be completed sometime around the year 2047.

Often rebuilds can skirt many of the requirements. But then again, this is California.

Be prepared to identify the tree species used to build the original, or pay a fine.

2047?

HA! My money is on 2123.

But Aptos should pay all of their black people $10 million each before they rebuild it.

Used to vacation a couple of times a year at Rio Del Mar nearby as a kid. The Cement Ship was an icon in the area.
