Did anybody see this?
Yes, Watched it at the time. Thought it was good then. Still do.
Believe it was real? No. And I don’t think anyone else did either.
I remember seeing that ...
I saw it...it was pretty heavily hyped. I can’t see how anyone could have thought it was real. There were only 3 channels and you had a tv guide so there wasn’t much chance of making that mistake.
The ending a week after the nuclear blast in Charleston, SC, the news readers, report on labor unrest and forget about Charleston, SC plight.
Now that I read my above writing, it was kinda of prophetic, current news cycle wise.
I was attending the Navy’s nuclear weapons maintenance school at the time, watching it in the barracks TV lounge with my classmates. We got a kick out of it.
“Did anybody see this?”
No, but “Able Archer 83” came pretty damn close to actually doing that.

Holy smokes I remember that!! Something about a boat in Charleston Harbor with a nuke onboard. I thought I was losing my mind. it would come to mind every so often, and I would ask people about it, and nobody had any recollection of it.
I did. It was very good. Never believed it was real, though.
I remember watching it.
I also remember how the national networks were eager to create nuclear catastrophe movies during Republican administrations.
But now, with a Democrat President, they completely ignore the fact that we’re currently the closest we’ve been to a nuclear confrontation than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis...
...which also occurred during a Democrat administration.
Nobody thought this was real. That’s BS.
This kind of sounds like a rip-off of Orson Welles’s radio broadcast of the late 30s about aliens from outer space invading.
There was actual panic in the streets! ;-)
It was clearly a TV program. Anyone who thought it was real should have had their reproductive organs removed.
Yes. Their disclaimer was deceptive. It said “dramatization” which does not necessarily mean fiction.
Yes,
And no, given the amount of disclaimers they aired, I doubt very many people thought this was real, and if they did, they did not think it for very long.
***Presented as an interruption of nightly programming for the fictional but convincingly presented RBS television network,***
Never heard of it till now, but I do remember the fear back in 1962!
The October Cuban Missile Crisis had America in a panic! We were on the verge of war with Russia! People were fleeing the cities in droves causing traffic jams and accidents!
Then it all blew over but we were still on edge because of it as no one trusted the Russians!
Then on Dec 24, was a break in the evening programing! An Unidentified Flying Object was picked up on the radar of the DEW Line! Suddenly the fear of October was back and we all took notice. Was this WAR? Incoming Russian missiles? We were glued to the TV set!
Then they showed a chintzy photo of Santa and his sleigh with cheap cotton ball clouds passing overhead.
That was one year we could have done without such nonsense. When I mentioned it to others, all remembered it and the sudden fear it caused at that time.
