Terrified workers fled a soaring new Manhattan skyscraper after experiencing a huge 'shake' run through the building, that made it feel as if its floors were collapsing.

One Vanderbilt, a $3.31 billion tower which sits just north of Grand Central train terminal in Midtown Manhattan, was struck by the tremor on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesman for One Vanderbilt said the shaking was due to repair work on the elevators, and there were no injuries as the public viewing platform was closed.

If 1 Vanderbilt collapsed due East it would crush Grand Central Terminal and take out the Chysler Building.

....and the United Nations as well (it is tall enough). Quite a game of Jenga indeed.

The only escalator I encounter is the one at the airport, and there are stairs too. Albuquerque is vertically challenged. You could live your whole life here and only use an elevator once every couple years.

In NYC, stairwells are more dangerous than elevators or escalators. Fortunately, I live rurally and don't use any of the 3.

....lol, I’ve developed and built quite a few buildings. Anyone that believes that “elevator repair” caused a 93 story to act like an earthquake just hit it please send me your phone number. I’ve got a great deal I would like to sell you!

If the building really acted as described, it either has a major, major construction flaw or it was geologic in nature.

There’s one building in NYC that has or had escalators that move at a different speed from the handrails. I can’t remember which one that is or was. You had to keep moving your hand, I think upward.

Dangerous for fingers! Hubby would yank back on the handrail and the escalator would stop. LOL He was fun!

Did you ever notice how nice cities look from the air? At around 3k feet they look pretty cool. Then you get on the ground and very abruptly things look different.

Or as Sir Kenneth Clark says at the start of the last episode of "Civilization":

"At a distance, (New York) does look rather like a celestial city. At a distance. Come closer...and it's not so good."

I’m glad I’m not the only one think similar.

Looking at the monstrosity triggers my OCD.

If elevator repairs cause the whole building to shake, I think there is a much bigger problem.

“New platform has stunning views of NYC at One Vanderbilt’s Summit”

Who wants “views of NYC”?

Exactly. Viewing a bunch of tall buildings is of no interest to me whatsoever. Not that I would ever set foot in NYC to begin with. I'll stick with viewing the natural wonders of Alaska.

You proved this is wrong.

There were extra long escalators atRoyals Stadium in Kansas City. One had a catastrophic failure and free-wheeled dumping allthe people. Very rare.
