Think about back then how different things were, especially for the poor, working class folks. Life pretty much sucked, war was thought of as an adventure that would break up the boredom, and at least allow some form of escape. Of course nobody could fathom the horrors that would befall them.
I think it was Tolstoy who wrote in “War And Peace’’ that “War is an excuse for men to wander around’’.
