The Santa Cruz Police Department is offering free gun locks and safety brochures to firearm owners to help promote safe storage and prevent guns from ending up in the wrong hands.

The SCPD said that it is the responsibility of firearm owners to ensure that their guns are stored safely and securely, out of reach of children and unauthorized individuals.

"Stolen firearms can end up in the hands of criminals who can use them to commit violent crimes," noted the police department in a post on Facebook.

To promote gun safety, the SCPD is giving away free child safety gun locks and gun safety brochures to the public. Interested individuals can pick up the free gun locks and brochures at the SCPD lobby, located at 155 Center Street, from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The SCPD stressed that it does not require any personal information from individuals who request free gun locks and brochures. The program is a free public service aimed at protecting families and preventing unnecessary tragedies.

Virtually every new firearm sold today comes with a lock and an owner’s manual that is 90% safety warnings, so this is a non-starter for many people.

And when some psycho breaks into your house at 3 AM, just say to him, “Hey Mr. Murderous Psychopath, just give me a few minutes while I find my key and undo this gun lock.”
