Jumping worms also stay within the first few inches of topsoil,
I'm reading this as "easier for chickens and other birds to catch."
The way I've seen robins go after ordinary earthworms, I seriously doubt these will hold up long. Unless something about them makes birds avoid eating them, but if there was anything like that in the article I missed it.

While earthworms in the springtime are a welcome sight for gardeners, this species consumes all organic material from the top layer of soil. They leave behind a coffee ground-like waste with no nutrients for plants or seeds.
