The first couple of Star Trek series had physicists and astronomers as tech consultants to make the "sci" part of the sci-fi almost believable. Plus they had people familiar with historical navy stories to make fictional futuristic adventures from real life navy adventures.

Each Star Trek series after Next Generation got a little further away from both elements. Discovery had neither. Without those it's not Star Trek.

The same thing happened with Star Wars. They can only milk it for so long and then it’s not credible anymore and they end up repeating shows and ideas, and it gets tiresome. Although with science fiction they can go back in time but it does not always work.
