Personally I have found Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis and This present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti helpful in creating a framework for how such influences operate.

My personal belief is, short of a full possession where demons indwell an individual, demons attach to people who have opened themselves up to their influences, much like a literal invisible monkey riding on your back.

Yep. I’ve had monkeys on my back several times in my life. And a couple of ‘em wore skirts.;-)

Definitely demonic influence. Even Christians can fall under that — but they can’t be possessed.
