They got their name from when two Pilgrim kids were out playing in the woods. Little Tom and Mary. Everyone thought the red fruits were poisonous. But Tom ate one. Mary ran back to town screaming “Tom Ate Those!”, “Tom Ate Those!”, “TomAteThose!”

That sounds an awful lot like the guy chasing the rolling wheel of free government cheese he dropped, screaming a warning to everyone,
“That’s not your cheese, that’s not your cheese!”
