My high school typing teacher took me aside at the end of the class to encourage me to keep up my skills. This was 1970, ans she said it would be a good way for me to stay off the front lines in Viet Nam should I be drafted. I ended up not getting drafted, but always remembered her concern for her young men students.

Wow, what a wonderful and caring teacher. No wonder you remember her with gratitude.

Vietnam was such an awful war. All wars are, but Vietnam was really awful. Not knowing who was friend or foe half the time, never being sure all the time, who was civilian or enemy combatant dressed as a civvie (or friendly). And, of course, all the horrors and brutality of war. But add the not knowing who was really who, and it takes it to whole ‘nother stress level.

I am so glad for your sake you were not drafted.
