The IBM Selectric was the typewriter that used a little golf ball sized thing to make the print.
You are talking about the IBM Executive. It had variable spacing depending on the width of the letter. The i and l had 1 or 2 units and the m had 5. Not a pleasant machine to use.

It’s been many years, but I also think I remember the word Selectric.
Anyway, it was worth it. My first job in book publishing and I stayed in the trade 40 years on staff and then did some freelance, where I was able to finally work on conservative books!
