Nuclear warheads don't serve much purpose if you don't know whether they are active or disabled. The guys sitting next to these missile silos deep underground have every possible sensor in front of them. They know everything about the missiles and their warheads that needs to be known for them to be fired at a moment's notice and hit their targets as designed.

FWIW, the guy testifying about Malmstrom AFB's UFO interference was Robert Salas, on-duty commander of the underground launch control facility at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. He is an Academy graduate.
