Me, a midwestern farm kid who attended a Christian college - on a trip to California in 1990 with friends - visited a mutual acquaintance at UC Santa Cruz (the banana slugs)

I saw a group of about 14 stoners/hippies, on LSD, playing frisbee, laying on the grass, playing guitar, dancing, etc... on the quad - most were completely naked.

I was told it was some kind of club who did it all the time

After since having travelled to about 40 different countries - its still one of the weirdest displays of humanity I have ever seen.

The sad part is there are a lot of great things about Santa Cruz. There are a lot of conservatives around, but they don’t get as much attention, and the local radio station is conservative, and it was there when you visited.

I grew up not far from there. When I was looking at colleges, I ruled out UC Santa Cruz as soon as I found out that they don't use "grades" (as in A's, B's, C's etc) there.
