When Mom turned 98 I was kidding around and told her it was probably OK if she wanted to start smoking. (She didn’t.)

The trend is much less leisure time each generation and a shorter life.
I'm not old enough quite yet to have tested this to its fullest, but from my observation, one of the keys to staying alive longer is never to stop moving. Being sedentary not only increases health problems in terms of cardiovascular fitness and what-not, but it allows your body almost literally to fall apart.
Right now, I'm watching middle-aged people with nothing but aches and pains that hobble them because they never get any exercise, while others (including me) that are diligent about fitness are still running around like much younger people.

My mom is celebrating her 101st birthday in a few days. My sister, who was terribly ill with just about everything, totally sedentary, and smoked three packs a day lived to just a few weeks shy of 71.

I used to hunt with a guy who smoked 3-4 packs of non-filter Camels and a minimum quart of Kessler’s everyday. For breakfast he’d take an orange, peel it and take a shot with every piece and he lived to 85.
Remember asking my doctor and he said that’s the problem with smoking and drinking is some people it never harms and with others, it’ll kill them before they’re 40.

“that’s the problem with smoking and drinking is some people it never harms and with others, it’ll kill them before they’re 40.”
Your doctor got it exactly correct.
Science can actually start doing some good when they can evaluate individual human beings and help them figure out what works for them.
Statistics are meaningless and misleading—we need data that applies to us as individuals.
