at that time, the public badly over reacted to the Kennedy assassination, and Johnson got the “sympathy” vote....that bastard had over a 100 seat majority in the House, and had 67 Dems in the Senate....and the rest is history....
Well at least we didn't get into a long unwinnable war, and have riots in the streets.
