Miles is looking off to the side. I think that is the drummer behind Miles, probably Tony Williams, but I could easily be wrong.
As for giving a death stare to Herbie Hancock, I may have done that once at Shelly's Manne Hole in LA, back in the day. Herbie was brilliant, but he was also a prima donna.
