I prefer a good golf club. Heavier the better. Of course I carry my CCW weapon but would be hesitant to use it in a populated area. Always carry a good knife!

When I walked my dog [over 10 years twice a day and a mile each time] I always carried both a pistol as well as a metal tipped walking stick, and like Gibb's rule #9, always carry a knife.
