They have the same name. They were born on the same day in South Korea. And they were both assigned the same Social Security number after they emigrated to the United States.
This bureaucratic bungle has bedeviled Jieun Kim, of Los Angeles, and Jieun Kim, who lives just outside Chicago in Evanston, Illinois, for almost as long as they’ve been in this country.
Over the past five years, the 31-year-old women have had their banking and savings accounts shut down. They have had their credit cards blocked. They have been suspected of engaging in identity theft.
And, they say, the Social Security Administration has been either unable, or unwilling, to rectify its mistake.
The result has been a level of frustration that LA Kim has likened to “throwing (an) egg onto the huge rock.”
“I’m left with fear about what is in store for me as I have to deal with this terrible aftermath of the Social Security Administration’s mistake in giving one Social Security number to two people,” she said.
Chicagoland Kim said the SSA won’t own up to its mistake.
“This kind of mix-up can happen with Asian people because they have very similar names,” she says she was told by its workers.
But after she recently filled out an application to get a new Social Security number, the SSA sent her the same number she had before and blamed the snafu on computer error.
“This is because the computer recognizes you guys as one person,” Chicagoland Kim says she was told by agency workers.
More ominously, LA Kim said, she was warned by some of the SSA workers she dealt with not to make a fuss about the mistake because it could delay her getting a green card.

Oh, thought this thread might be about pResident Harrison J. Bounell.
Never mind........
Methinks they SSA does not to fix it because they can’t, and there are probably at least thousands of SSNs used fraudulently by illegal aliens who have assumed the identities of citizens.
Asian's fault! They should change their last names. Maybe half the people named Kim could change it to Lee. And half the people named Lee could change it Kim.
(Kim and Lee are the two most popular last names in SK. :))
Just ask Barry Soreto how to resolve the problem with being issued a new SS#.
South Korean traditions apparently do not include middle names. Perhaps that needs to change.
The BC they released was such a counterfeit. The ones digits in the serial number were different — a combination of machine stamping and digital rasterization.
Barry was reported on older FR threads of having several SS#s and one person at a SSA office who got unauthorized access to his files was killed.
Heard about the multiple SS #s. Didn’t know about the related murder — unreal.
All totalitarian governments exhibit the very same personality...
Look for these problems to become more common - and increasingly difficult to solve. Anybody can be impacted.
My medical records were combined with another person’s who has the same first + last names and birthdate as me. Hospital told me they fixed the problem but they wouldn’t show me proof. God forbid I get admitted to that hospital without the ability to explain it - my namesake was admitted years ago .. from the state prison, with multiple psychiatric díagnoses and related medications.
The following year a local condo board denied my application because they accessed the other guy’s criminal record and said it was me. Even though the other guy has a different middle name, different height, different colored eyes, and is a different race than me, and there was a picture of him.
Hey it was in the computer so must be right…
Didn’t his draft registration have a postal cancellation for a time later than when he was supposed to have applied?
Many federal workers are incompetent and the computers and their programmers are are usually either nepotistic or diversity hires.
Nothing works and nobody cares.
Obama’s Selective Service Registration card was postmarked the day BEFORE he signed and dated it. (common type of error in forged documents - screwing the dates up)
A miracle!!!
Oh, and the century fell off.

The SSA stopped my FIL’s checks after a stay in the hospital because according to them, he had died. After going round and round with them by phone, including a few times telling bureaucrats “He’s sitting right here, do you want to talk to him??” the folks contacted our congressman.
The congressional office had staffers who dealt with the SSA all the time and straightened it out. The hospital had mistakenly merged FIL’s file with another guy’s.
So if they’d both contact their Congressmen, maybe they can get some help.
