That triggered a memory.
My Mom and Dad were going out to vote in the 1956 Presidential election. Dad in his grey suit (He was a blue collar man and only got dressed for important occasions), Mom in her dress with hat and gloves.
Little Chucky, being a curious lad, asked them who they were going to vote for.
Dad replied "We always vote Democrat."
"But why? Aren't you going to vote for General Ike?"
And Dad said "Because the Democrats are for the Little Guy".
Then Mom chimed in "Well, I vote Democrat because they pay two dollars and the Republicans only pay one.
Dad, rather sharply - "Don't tell him that!"
Mom, adamantly "Well it's true!"
True story. I was only 7 but the episode really stuck in my mind.
I was in the 8th grade for the 56 election. I always remember one of my classmates repeating his folks were voting dim because the “Democrats were for the farmer.” Yup, sure they were? They just got thru dumping crops and killing cattle herds to keep prices up. That worked great.
A phrase initiated by Andrew Jackson! Do you suppose anything has changed since then? ...like slavery?
