I’m trying intermittent fasting. We eat breakfast at noon. Going to the gym is tough on a fast. I chug some aminos 20 minutes before and it seems to help. Been at it a month and have lost zero pounds. I must be doing it wrong.

“I must be doing it wrong.”

Amino acids are a group of 20 organic compounds that share specific formation traits. They are known as the ‘building blocks’ of proteins in both plants and animals. Because they play such a foundational role, they are involved in many chemical reactions throughout your body to help maintain your body’s normal functions.

Protein supplements don’t improve performance or recovery time and, according to a recent study, such supplements are inefficient for most athletes. “They are often poorly used or unnecessary by both high-level athletes and amateurs,” says Martin Fréchette, a researcher and graduate of the Université de Montréal Department of Nutrition.

Another way to look at it is like oil in your automobile engine. If you use bad oil, or no oil, the body won’t run right. Supplements are not a substitute for nutrition, so fasting doesn’t help the weight loss reaction to it. Your body needs vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food to stay healthy. If you don’t get enough, you can have symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, constipation, and dehydration plus a problem with cold temps. When you eat less than you need and you lose weight, your body goes into a starvation mode. To save energy, your metabolism slows down.

When you’re done fasting and you go back to your usual diet, you may regain the weight you lost, and then some. On a fast, your body adjusts by curbing your appetite, so you will feel less hungry at first. But once you have stopped fasting, your appetite revs back up. You may feel hungrier and be more likely to overeat.

Fasting every other day has similar results. It helps people lose weight, but not for long. In one study, people who fasted every other day shed weight, even when they ate all they wanted on days when they weren’t fasting. But the weight loss didn’t last over time as people will stray from the comfort and fulfillment of eating and slow or stop the fasting process. Don’t not eat, eat with a purpose and intelligently.
