I am posting this article, which isn't new news in order to illustrate two important facts: (1) the USAF and USSF have the means to both intercept telemetry from foreign intelligence assets AND the ability to stop said assets from 'phoning home.' (2) despite the junk news and pontificating by 'media experts' I am confident our military took the steps necessary to protect our nation.
In my professional life I work closely with USAF and USSF personnel and despite idiocy from political leadership, I know the Commands, Airmen and Guardians who work in the area of 'intel' are skilled and competent.
There are two quotes in the body of the article I want to highlight, and I am confident they are true and accurate. See below.
"I would also note that while we took all necessary steps to protect against the PRC surveillance balloon's collection of sensitive information, the surveillance balloon's overflight of U.S. territory was of intelligence value to us,"
AND
"Long before the shoot down, U.S. officials took steps to protect against the balloon's collection of sensitive information, mitigating its intelligence value to the Chinese."
Note also these assets were first tracked off the Aleutians and as they re-entered US airspace from Canada, or Canadia if you prefer.
Do NOT expect real details any time soon. Just don't.

That to me is the real threat: the ability to drop a physical payload (or several) of a bio-weapon, or even something persistent like Plutonium (and similar).
Kill crops, livestock, people and deny the area for use for years.
It took thousands of Chinamen to blow it up but only one AMERICAN F-22 Raptor to knock it down.
Exactly... And the whole “we’re adjusting our radars to pick these up” is pure BS.
Don’t forget your high altitude gear.
The balloon itself was most like invisible to radar. Radar can’t see anything that it can pass through without reflections.
We learned yesterday that it was tracked by our military off Guam and knew exactly when it left China, so it wasn’t invisible.
The balloon itself is probably invisible; however, NORAD once claimed that it could spot something the size of a .22 caliber bullet coming over the horizon.
I think the point is, they saw it waaaay before it got to Alaska.
Yeah, I am sure they did. They probably have an agreement that allows them to do so. That is why Biden let it pass unmolested across the entire Nation. The more recent ones are for show.
