There is no right vs. left. There’s totalitarianism vs. anarchy. Most of human history has trended toward totalitarianism, it’s human nature to grab as much power as you can and lord over those weaker than yourself. The founding fathers recognized that pure anarchy doesn’t work either so they designed a system in the middle of limited government that protected individual rights while still giving government enough power to be functional. We’ve spent the last 240 years slowly dismantling those protections.

I chuckle whenever someone describes communism as “left” and fascism as “right”. They’re the exact same thing! They only differ in who they want to murder. They’re both on the far totalitarian end of the scale. The reason the granola crowd and what the author calls the “alt right” crowd have something in common is that they both want to be left alone, they’re on the anarchy end.
