I'd say most of the drive for men to outcompete other men and to acquire stuff is......to get women. Holy crap are they competitive with each other!

They ain't hitting the gym and doing all that dieting and wearing those uncomfortable clothes and shoes and piling on makeup and wearing jewelry, and taking an hour to do their hair before going out in public, etc etc etc for nothing.
