Yes, they wrong some songs but they weren’t allowed to record their own songs until later in their career, when they weren’t really scoring many hits.
And I believe only two of them could really play instruments at the start, Tork and Nesmith. Both Dolenz and Jones were actors by trade, and though they had singing experience, they were not musicians when they were recruited.
“Did you mean post fab four?”
“Pre-fab four” is a play on the fact that the band was put together by the studio and television company, with people “cast” as band members after answering a cattle call. So they were “pre-fabricated”.
“Cameos from Zappa, Jack Nicholson..”
Speaking of Nicholson, one of his early gigs was writing the Monkees’ movie “Head”, which I think was released a year before his star turn in “Easy Rider”.
Oh, I don't know: Mickey sang lead on a substantial number of their biggest singles:
"Last Train to Clarksville" - Mickey
"I'm a Believer" - Mickey
"(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" - Mickey
"A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You" - Davy
"(Theme from) The Monkees" - Mickey
"I Wanna Be Free" - Davy
"Pleasant Valley Sunday" - Mickey
"Words" - Mickey
"I Wanna Be Free" - Davy
"Daydream Believer" - Davy
"Goin' Down" - Mickey
"Valleri" - Davy
"Mary, Mary" - Mickey
"What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?" - Mike
"Listen to the Band" - Mike
"Shades of Gray" - Peter
"Sometime In the Morning" - Mickey (My favorite Monkees tune)
Then, this just wasn’t the best song for Mickey’s voice range.
I think that’s fair to say.
Awesome song and performance. Mickey did it in one take.
Take a Giant Step - Mickey
Randy Scouse Git - Mickey
Saturday’s Child - Mickey
Cuddly Toy - Davy
Mickey Dolenz hot daughter actress Ami Dolenz.

Yeah. I never heard it before, I only knew what was on the radio. But Mickey deserves props for being able to sing that song - end of sentence...
You forgot “For Pete’s Sake” AKA “In this Generation”, sung by Mickey.
Yes, I did. Thanks.
