An STD was instrumental to AL Capones mental decline and ultimate death.......I suspect something similar here. I took a course in Abnormal Psychology and one of the lectures was on what happens to the brain with end-stage Syphilis. We studied the brain morphology; Pretty horrifying. Also in the lecture we listened to an interview with a woman suffering from the disease. Her answers bore no relation to the questions.
