I read the book, saw the movie and read an interview with the real life guy who's depicted. His real life situation was not nearly as bad as the drama depicted. And, in the end, he escaped by simply walking across the border.

And the guard he killed. He didn't kill anybody, but the guard was killed on the outside by another ex con.

Oliver Stone must have been coked up good when writing the screenplay. Quite a bit of embellishment, it sounds like.
