I understand it was comedy but I never understood the comedy of Al being repulsed by Peg. She was hotter than a $3 pistol.

I never saw that explained until the big anniversary show years later. Al was supposed to go to college on a football scholarship, until he got his cheerleader girlfriend (Peg) pregnant. With that, they had to get married, and his part-time job selling shoes became his full-time dead-end career.

So it wasn’t that they were “repulsed” by each other (at times they clearly weren’t)...it’s that they were constantly being reminded of how they had screwed up their lives in one foolish moment years ago.
