Anyone who ever heard Snoozer Quinn said that he was the best guitarist they ever heard.
Quinn was without peer which has been attested to by many who heard or knew him. Among them were the superlative Jazz guitarists of the late-1920s and 1930s like Eddie Lang who heard Snoozer during his brief stay New York City.
Quinn came within a whisker of disappearing from music history altogether. But a recording at his deathbed shortly before his passing has left us a tiny fragment; a mere glimpse of his fading brilliance.
The nickname “Snoozer” was, according to his brother Alton Quinn, “because he was so good he could sleep and play at the same time.” This reflects his well-known ability to strum guitar while reaching out and shaking your hand without interrupting himself. It may well have been this very trick which prompted bandleader Paul Whiteman to hire Snoozer upon first meeting.
A musician’s musician, Quinn was well received in New York. His colleagues were blown away crowding into his hotel room day and night urging him to play. Whiteman took Snoozer around to parties showing him off like a trick pony.
He made a few band recordings, but they failed to capture his sound, inaudible in the band context. And the handful of solo discs he made were lost and never recovered.
By March 1929 Quinn had returned to his Louisiana stomping grounds around Bogalusa near New Orleans. He was employed at a Goodyear Tire garage and played for local bands, theaters and parties.
His health was never robust and severely impacted by his chronic alcoholism. In 1940 Quinn was hospitalized for tuberculosis.
Not long before his passing Snoozer was visited in his New Orleans hospital room by local trumpet player Johnny Wiggs. Using a portable disc-recording machine he made the only surviving examples of Quinn’s gift.
Recently, authors Dan Sumner and Katy Hobgood Ray (his great-great niece) have vividly portrayed and thoroughly documented this obscure musician for the first time in print: Snoozer Quinn: Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Pioneer, 2021 found at Snoozerquinn.com. Here's a brief overview of three classic New Orleans guitar stylists of the 20th Century. Snoozer Quinn, fingerstylist, born in McComb MS, died of tuberculosis in Charity Hospital. His solo deathbed recordings can be heard on YouTube. Lonnie Johnson was the premier male blues and jazz vocalist and guitarist in the early years of radio. Snooks Eaglin is hands down my favorite New Orleans guitarist.Snooks, Snoozer & Lonnie (Chip Wilson)

uh 1:09 · that is a tune called i don't know 1:10 · nowhere loosely in the style of the 1:13 · great snoozer quinn who's a product of 1:15 · the great jazz era 1:18 · and uh 1:19 · well known for being a guitarist who 1:21 · played with his fingers 1:22 · not with a pick 1:24 · like so many of the guitarists that that 1:26 · era did 1:27 · um 1:29 · here's a story about snoozer quinn i 1:31 · thought he had no known recordings but i 1:33 · was proven wrong 1:35 · uh a great new orleans clarinetist named 1:38 · pud brown came into uh new orleans music 1:40 · exchange one day 1:42 · and put a guitar a guitar in my hands 1:44 · and and said hey would you play that and 1:47 · and so i did i played something just 1:49 · like that and 1:50 · at the end he goes uh that sounded just 1:53 · like snoozer quinn and i was like 1:56 · just like snoozer quinn there's not even 1:58 · any recordings of snoozer quinn and he 2:00 · goes oh no there's there's some 2:02 · recordings out there and there's one 2:04 · that he made on his deathbed in charity 2:06 · hospital like just a couple days before 2:09 · he died 2:11 · and uh yeah yeah you should see if you 2:13 · can find that anyway you sound a lot 2:15 · like snoozer quinn and i was like 2:17 · that's kind of an amazing fantastic 2:20 · thing 2:21 · so anyway snoozer quinn 2:23 · uh 2:25 · one of the most influential guitarists 2:27 · of the early part of the 20th century 2:30 · um was a guy from algiers louisiana just 2:33 · across the river his name was lonnie 2:35 · johnson 2:36 · robert johnson 2:38 · uh 2:39 · almost 2:41 · almost all of the anyone who had access 2:43 · to a record uh player basically 2:47 · knew about lonnie johnson if they were 2:48 · interested in guitar and blues music and 2:51 · jazz 2:52 · and uh anyway he played with a pick and 2:56 · uh did some amazing things with a 2:58 · guitarist named eddie lang one of the 2:59 · first 3:00 · uh 3:01 · uh sort of integrated uh studio duos to 3:05 · play 3:06 · and uh doing instrumentals he played 3:09 · with louis armstrong he played with duke 3:11 · ellington 3:13 · and uh late in life uh he played mostly 3:16 · in electric guitar 3:18 · kind of inexpensive one just like this 3:21 · here's a tune from lonnie johnson played 3:23 · again roughly in the lonnie johnson 3:26 · style 3:28 · [Music] 3:47 · [Music] 3:56 · i'm going back to new only place for me 6:05 · [Music] 6:12 · that's where i want to be 6:16 · [Music] 6:23 · lonnie johnson 6:25 · check him out algiers louisiana 6:29 · so let's see we talked about uh snoozer 6:31 · quinn and lonnie johnson 6:34 · and 6:36 · one more uh favorite player of mine 6:39 · uh 6:41 · who actually got a credit on an album 6:44 · from the great snooks eaglin 6:47 · on one of his blacktop records 6:49 · uh because i fixed up his epiphone 6:51 · guitar 6:52 · and proudly playing this epiphone guitar 6:55 · right now i fixed up his epiphone guitar 6:58 · so i would play in tune for a recording 7:00 · session and play well for him and they 7:02 · made a great record and 7:04 · and the scott brothers were grateful for 7:06 · uh 7:07 · my effort in getting that record to work 7:09 · out 7:10 · anyway uh 7:11 · snook is a guy who played with his 7:12 · fingers uh and uh 7:15 · he 7:16 · originally was marketed as like this 7:18 · folk blues guy but really he was an r b 7:20 · guy uh played with alan toussaint and a 7:23 · lot of the other greats 7:24 · um 7:26 · he was blind allegedly drove the boys 7:28 · home one night when uh 7:31 · everybody was just too drunk to drive 7:33 · and uh driving along the river road 7:36 · from a gig back toward new orleans 7:38 · um 7:40 · sure 7:41 · um 7:42 · anyway uh 7:44 · stokes played with his fingers and uh 7:47 · here's one of the tunes they they they 7:48 · did 7:49 · when they were recording them early on 7:51 · with like an acoustic 12 string which is 7:53 · definitely not snook's thing but anyway 7:56 · here's one of the my favorites from 7:58 · snook's eaglin play with my fingers not 8:00 · really exactly in snook's style but i'ma 8:02 · give you my best 8:04 · [Music] 8:09 · i'm a country boy 8:11 · down into all these 8:15 · i'm a country boy 8:16 · way down into all lanes 8:19 · [Music] 8:20 · i can't find no place to get damn greasy 8:24 · green 8:26 · [Music] 8:39 · got a ways to make a country boy 8:48 · [Music] 9:04 · big beautiful eyes 9:06 · [Music] 9:19 · cause i'm a country 9:21 · [Music] 9:25 · i'm a country boy 9:27 · way down in new orleans 9:30 · [Music] 9:31 · can't find no place to get down 9:34 · [Music] 9:37 · can't find no place to get them greasy 9:40 · green 9:42 · [Music] 9:52 · all right here's a very very brief 9:55 · overview of three classic new orleans 9:58 · guitar players snoozer quinn 10:00 · snooks eaglin 10:02 · and the great lonnie johnson 10:05 · check them out on youtube you can find 10:06 · some stuff on them i think all right 10:08 · y'all chip wilson
