Besides a clear, cool stream, a solitary shelter stood. Blackened by weather and time, the structure was piled high on all sides with rubbish. If not for a window the size of a shoe box, it would have been impossible to imagine that people lived inside. But they did. And the arrival of outsiders had been noticed. The year was 1978.
The low-hanging door creaked slowly open, and an aged man emerged into the sharp light. To the visitors, he appeared as a character of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
Barefoot, he wore a patchwork shirt made of sacking with trousers of the same material―also seemingly held together with random patches. He sported a long, tangled, unkempt beard that covered his chest and belly and hair likewise long and matted as if mirrors were unknown to him.
Alarm showed in his deep-set eyes, but he appeared quite alert. Speaking in Russian, the strangers said, “Greetings, grandfather! We’ve come to visit!” The old man paused a few seconds, then said calmly, “Well, since you have traveled this far, you might as well come in.”

When Pismenskaya asked how the family came to live in the middle of the Siberian forest, Karp explained that when the Bolsheviks (the Marxist group that evolved into the Communist Party) took over Russia, the Old Believers were forced to move farther and farther away from the cities until the only place beyond their reach was Siberia.
“In 1936, my brother was shot and killed by a Communist patrol. So we left everything behind but the possessions we could carry and retreated into the forest―me, my wife, Akulina, our nine-year-old son Savin, and our daughter Natalia, only two. After living in several parts of the forest, we settled here. Then in 1940, we had our son, Dmitry, and in 1943, our daughter Agafia. Neither of our youngest has ever seen a human being, not a family member, until now.”
sounds like it was not really fun, but they did survive.
probably the dating pool was not large for the daughters.
Sounds like Dr. Zhivago redux.
Read the entire piece, an incredible story, one which has many counterparts across the world.
This story has been around for a few years. Always worth renewing interest in it. As a wilderness survival story it has no equal. Only dogged perseverance and faith in God kept them going.
I used to have that book.
Bkmk
Such is the evil of the Marxist Soviet Union regime Id bet money they were all assassinated by poison or radioactivity etc. They were a huge stain on the reputation of the communists, showing people were so desperate to escape their oppression they were willing to live like animals in fridges cold.
That talk about the young women bodies failing due to low calorie malnutrition is PURE HORSE- crap 💩. Every study I’ve ever seen about people kept on starvation diets show they end up with LONGER lives on average if they escape the immediate danger.
“ Against all odds: Male Holocaust survivors have a longer life-expectancy”
“ Women live longer than men even during severe famines and epidemics”
“ Calorie-Starved Rats Live Longer: Study”
I don’t think people , myself included, have any idea of how demonic communism really is.
Amazing! Thank you for posting this.
I watched Agafiya’s documentary about 3 years ago. Amazed that she had lived so long, she had a kind of suitor/neighbor there living nearby.
Although there was an implied history of incest in the family.
He replied: "I wouldn't know, I've only ever killed Communists".

This is a story of Samuil. For the past 20 years, Samuil has chosen to live far away from civilization, together with bears and wolves, in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
Rabbit starvation is always close.
Both interesting comments.
The video reminded me of this guy…I think he lives considerably better than the Asian though.
Also hard to believe that area is so poor he can’t find a discarded piece of glass somewhere.

He didn't have to break trail for at least a week, I'm guessing.
He was taking standing dead, which is pretty surprising. You'd think he cleaned all that crap out from close by after 20 years...
Walked more than a few miles on trails like that - saw it right off. :)
Rabbit starvation is always close.
Your fatness...
I could just imagine the GD black flies up there in the summer.
Have gone to Canada fishing a couple times and one time I thought I would like to do some trout fishing. I lasted about an hour.
I believe Solzhenitsyn tells a similar tale, possibly in the GULAG series, of a group of Old Believers who fled Communism and took up residence in one of Russia’s vast wilderness areas. They were discovered by accident when an airplane flew over their location and reported them to the authorities. Sadly, for them, they then became just more victims for the Soviet merciless gristmill.
City folk don’t know nothing about the black flies.
