So De Santis is our Kerry “I voted for the lockdowns before I voted against them”
Yes, in a sense.
After Trump effectively abdicated his position as President of the United States, and handed control of the country over to Dr. Fauci, DeSantis indeed followed the guidelines put forth by the Fauci White House before concluding that these guidelines were economically disastrous and didn’t mitigate Covid, so he moved to reverse them in Florida.
We closed 29 days. Big deal. We’re the third largest state. States like Montana with more cows than people may not have. Florida is thriving thanks to DeSantis. Meanwhile Montana has a democratic statewide politician. Florida does not!
Here’s the exact timeline:
- March 16, 2020: Trump issues his nationwide lockdown guidelines “Two Weeks To Flatten The Curve”
- March 30, 2020: Two weeks later, Trump extends his nationwide lockdown guidelines, indefinitely
- April 1, 2020: DeSantis eventually announced his limited lockdown plan for Florida, based on Trump’s request, but much less restrictive than Trump’s nationwide guidelines
Here’s Trump’s actual announcement, far prior to any actions by DeSantis:
TRUMP: “This afternoon, we’re announcing new guidelines for every American to follow ... The White House Task Force meets every day and continually updates guidelines ... we’ve made the decision to further toughen the guidelines and blunt the infection now. We’d much rather be ahead of the curve than behind it, and that’s what we are.
Therefore, my administration is recommending that all Americans, including the young and healthy, work to engage in schooling from home when possible.
Avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people.
Avoid discretionary travel.
And avoid eating and drinking at bars, restaurants, and public food courts.
If everyone makes this change or these critical changes and sacrifices now, we will rally together as one nation and we will defeat the virus.”
