Police officers tried to help a drunk man at a subway station — and realized he was packing a bizarre-looking homemade rifle in his pants, leading to his arrest over the weekend, police sources said Monday.
Melvin Montoya, 37, was found drunk inside the 149th Street–Grand Concourse station in Mott Haven around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, and cops jumped in to aid him, authorities said.
That’s when they noticed a long, heavy metal object going down his leg.
The officers frisked Montoya — and he allegedly reached for the crudely-made weapon, which the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit later determined was a gas-operated one-shot rifle, according to police and the sources.
Photos of the weird handmade gun obtained by The Post show a long, metal wrench-like device with screws and what appears to be a lever.
Montoya allegedly told cops he built the device himself, and that it was capable of firing rounds, sources said.
He was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon – one for possession of a disguised gun and another for carrying a gun as a convicted felon, cops said.

As long as it’s not a bump stock or a gas stove he’s legal.
He better be sufficiently sober to NOT buy +P ammo.
Ah, I think he means “natural” gas.
“How do you spell that”
“Just like it sounds”
Still to this day I remember that obscure scene laughing because of the spelling of some of my family members’ names.
I wouldn’t want to be in the middle of NYC unarmed either.
It needs a little chainsaw attachment.
That’s the old gas valve from my water heater.

Looks like it needs a larger gas tank.
Every gun is gas operated. Even a BB gun, unless it’s one of the spring types..
I suspect you are talking about the semi-auto or auto action, but never the less, if it’s a ‘zip-gun’ as it appears, gas moves the projectile.
Not to detract from useless journalism errors.....

“how is it gas operated if it’s one shot?...” [BereanBrain, post 4]

Clueless journalists are indeed most likely the case here.
Single-shot autoloading arms have been made:

Winchester turn out thousands of their Model 55 22 rimfire single shot, beginning in 1957. It’s often called a semi-auto, or an autoloader, but a more precise description would be “auto ejecting.” Fired from an open bolt.
“Gas operated” refers more often to a mechanism with a gas piston (or a tube in the AR-15 family) that operates the bolt, but blowback actions take advantage of the propellant gases pushing back directly on the cartridge case, which then pushes back on the bolt.
Female subway passenger: “Is that a bizarre looking homemade rifle in your pants or are you just glad to see me?”
(Reference to Mae West classic quote-—for those youthful people here.)
Really picky background:
“Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?” – was not spoken by Mae West in She Done Him Wrong (1933) – but she did restate the line in her final film Sextette (1978) to co-star George Hamilton. Reportedly, she spoke the line to an escorting LA police officer who met her at the LA railway station in February, 1936.
I respect your knowledge on this matter.
But gas always operates the projectile.
So some semantics perhaps...
Where’s the safety?

Thanks many times over for the courteous reply.
Semantics is almost always in play, but when discussing firearms and ammunition, precision and lack of ambiguity might be better. Designers, developmental engineers, gunsmiths, and parts technicians are happier when we speak so.
My sense of the dialog is that “operation” typically refers to the system design mechanical function of a firearm. I respectfully submit that it might be more precise to say that the expanding gases propel the projectile.
I tried and tried but failed to think of any other single shot firearms that “automatically” eject the empty case after firing.
To judge by documentary footage aired by History Channel, American Heroes Channel, and similar venues, some artillery pieces possessed an auto-ejecting capability. I’ve seen film clips from World War One, where the French Mle 1897 field gun shucked the spent case in recoil, leaving the breechblock open for insertion of the next round. Similar footage captured from the Germans in World War Two appears to show the same thing happening during firing of various guns.
