I think if a worker provides his own office and supplies, and sets his own hours, he qualifies as an independent contractor. So it's to the employer's advantage to reclassify such a worker as an independent contractor.

I hear many of these "work from home" people actually already serve multiple employers during their "office hours," without the employers' knowledge.

If I were an employer, I'd try to reclassify as many employees as independent contractors as legally possible. Makes them easier to fire, harder for them to sue, and you don't have to provide as many benefits. Just a fee based on work produced.

I don't know many who get to set their own hours working remotely. I'm sure there are some whose jobs don't require interaction that can. It's hard to collaborate that way.

Honestly, I'd be fine as an IC, but then chances are I wouldn't put up with the constant BS streaming from HR and UM. I think it comes back to vmpolesov's comment - Control Freakery.

As it so happens I am an independent contractor and have been for 15 years. That suits me just fine.
