According to Wikipedia, Ventimiglia is on the Ligurian coast of Italy, 81 miles southwest of Genoa, 4.3 miles from the current border with France. Formerly it was 20 miles from the French border, but the name has nothing to do with twenty miles. It is a corruption of the original Album Intimilium.

Traveling around Italy by train I'm always amazed at how many places are named Sottopassaggio. Every train station seems to have one nearby.

Isn't that just the word for "underpass", which would naturally be found near a train station or roadways? Or are you saying it is the name of a town?
