The man who gave the Marshall Tucker Band their name died at age 99 on Jan. 20.
The Southern rock pioneers chose their moniker from a random discovery soon after they’d formed in 1972, as they confirmed in a social media post.
“We are saddened to hear of the passing of someone very special to our hearts, for very obvious reasons,” the post read. “Our band’s namesake, Mr. Marshall Tucker, passed away peacefully yesterday morning at the age of 99. Though he was never a member of our band, we wouldn’t be here today without his historic name.”
It continued: “In the early days when we were rehearsing in an old warehouse in Spartanburg, we found a keychain inscribed with his name. We needed a name ASAP… and the rest is history! Marshall was blind since birth but amazingly could play the heck out of the piano. He always said his talent was simply God-given. He tuned pianos in South Carolina for decades. We are thankful for Mr. Marshall Tucker and the life he lived! Sending blessings to his wife and family.”
Frontman Doug Gray, the group's only remaining original member, has explained on many occasions that the group hadn’t realized Marshall Tucker was an individual, assuming the keychain referred to a company that owned or leased the warehouse they used for rehearsal.
Saw them in concert my freshman year. They were great. (Though my favorite was Queen!)
We were going to concerts all the time when I was in school. I don’t think my kids have ever been to one!
thx
in the 80’s we used to play the same circuit as / were good friends with “The Paul Brothers Band” that are first cousins with Henry Paul
small world...
Hughie Thomason died in Brooksville, FL in 2007. I used to live in Brooksville, but before that time. He was a great performer.
Lynyrd I think.
Great band. “Heard it in a Love Song” is one of my favorite songs.
Couldn’t hold on just one more year?
RIP
“Desert Skies” is a beautiful song. Used to be a desert rat. Thought of that song often.
“You mean, like, a record player.”
Nope. Like a turntable.
They both play vinyl, but the similarity pretty much ends there.
My turntable was a component part of a complete audio system of separate elements: Amplifier, tuner, tape deck, speakers, etc. All of which came and were purchased separately. I discovered that the sound quality was better with a component system rather than an internally integrated system.
“No doubt hanging out now with Leonard Skinner.”
They may one day be joined by Hootie and his friend, the Blowfish
Seems like in general, those Southern Rockers didn’t live very long, I know all the former members of Molly Hatchet are all gone.
“Last of the Singin’ Cowboys”, “You Say You Love Me”, and “Twenty-four Hours at a Time” are a few of my faves.
I saw Wet Willie in Macon , Georgia in a park , 1973 . Loved them .
He’s the weird one who looks early similar to Marylin Manson.
Wow. I’m a big Marshall Tucker Band fan way back in my teens, but somehow never got around to knowing the back story to the name. This is very interesting. RIP, you infamous legend.
That’s a fair list of good bands I also like right there.
: )
