“jail sentences”

Many leftists jurisdictions have cut back on jail because of:
1. its cost
2. its associated possibility of reducing the leftist voter base
3. it can result in a criminal losing honest employment

What could be done for minor crimes is saying requiring petty criminals to serve say 100 hours within a courthouse room or in an outside pen of the courthouse say within 100 days, or face say 30 days of actual jail time.

There would be no need to pay for their medical care or food (and they would still be able retain an honest job since they could pick the times that they serve their sentence).

To encourage them to serve such time, the time they serve within say 10 days of their arrest might be double credited and that within 11 to 30 days given a 50% bonus, decreasing by 1% a day thereafter.

The mere threat of actual incarceration can be quite effective. The IRS collects about a trillion dollars annually upon threats of imprisonment.

I take it you have all the money you need - and good insurance. If someone took your car and totaled it - your life would go on as normal. You have the security to be above it all.

Well, how nice for you.

You’re one of the people - with your ideas - who have turned our country into a place where many people are prisoners in their homes because they’re afraid to go out at night ... and in some place fearful more often than not.

Your concern for the criminal and not the victim is disgusting. People who should care about the criminals are his/her/it’s parents, aunts and uncles and friends. The rest of us need to care about the innocent victim. And you say what if no family member cares about the victim? That’s the point. The potential criminal needs to know there aren’t ready and gullible surrogates.

My system leads to a sane culture that controls it’s criminals and helps the borderline learn to care about themselves because if they become a burden to their loved ones - they’re out on their own. Yes, your sister might let you sleep on the couch to get back on your feet, but her husband wants you to get a job and get out. Which is healthy. These are the natural carrots and sticks of a sane society.

Reminds me of a story from years ago - a women had a dog that would jump on her bed and pee. (this is a true story) She decided the dog was expressing hostility because he needed more love. So when he peed on her bed she would show him attention and love.

Dog peed more....

Skinner’s idea “behaviors that are reinforced will tend to continue, while behaviors that are punished will eventually end...” has merit. The focus on ‘helping the criminal or addict is a mistake. The most basic research shows liberal choices are making MORE criminals and more addicts and more homeless. It’s not kindness - it’s nuts.

The advantage of a 2 year sentence for the first offense is it doesn’t allow for drip drip drip of accepting being a criminal. Of course if the punishment’s too severe could could backfire. Again - that shouldn’t be the focus. All our social and society concerns must be placed with the innocent victim. Making him whole again... There’s an incentive pattern here that’s been successful for hundreds of years... and we need to start using it again.
