Pulverized coal is what is used in steam power plants. There were pulverized coal fired boilers in locomotives.

There is a 1911 patent 3,021 797 using pulverized coal for locomotives but that is using a turbine/electric with the hot gasses from the pulverized coal running a turbine.

1930-1944 Germany had extensive development of locomotives using dry pulverized coal in diesels.
