Yes this! Been working for trains for over 60 years. Very efficient. All the benefits of electric - high torque and great acceleration - with all the benefits of diesel - relatively cheap, constant recharge and quick refueling.
20-some years ago, Car & Driver magazine ran an article comparing energy efficiency of various forms of transportation, taking into account the costs to manufacture the vehicles, to pump oil and refine fuels from it, to generate and distribute electricity, and I don’t remember what all. The most efficient way to move a given tonnage was steel wheels on steel rails, powered by diesel-electric locomotives.
