At this stage she should know.

Who is responsible and who is not.

It does not have to be black and white.

True

I’ve waffles on this a hit and think back to how much anything would have helped my wife and I -and then wonder if it might have slowed us down?

I grew up lower middle class and we always struggled, wife grew up
poor and spent much of her youth in actual poverty and for us not wanting to live that way ever again drove us to work and succeed like nothing else

And I really don’t want my kids to have to repeat that but then again…

My husband and I have good sons. We will leave them an inheritance. By the give it away logic, she shpuld also not pay for one bit of help after they turn 18. My step dad bragged that he never helped his kids after they turned 18. He is one mean bastard.
The small inheritance I received two years ago was a beautiful gift. It is allowing me to help a niece get started in college and get away from a bad family life. Niece has always been good and worked hard, but she needs help. It is helping us live a better life too.
