What would happen if we eliminated all references to parties on the ballots?
Vanity

Posted on 01/13/2023 12:03:27 PM PST by Chicory

Imagine if our ballots had no references to which party the nominees were from?

I don't think we should have parties listed anyway: they are not a Constitutional thing, but also people would actually have to know the names of whom they were voting for.

No, just like ranked choice voting, bad ideas. Let candidates pick a party else be independent. But no, don’t strip party affiliation from a ballot. If someone wants to be a Democrat or Republican, let them own it, don’t hide it from the voters.

Besides, what problem are you trying to fix? Do you want to destroy parties, do you want to hinder people knowing and voting for a party? Do you think you’ll get more meaningful voting without party labels? Doubtful on the latter, they’ll just pick the first, or last or whatever names sounds familiar. Else, skip voting, which can hurt everyone equally. Better to embrace voting, parties, and so forth. Better we pick better candidates who can wear party label honestly. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, we need to primary and hold members accountable, even if it means losing majority in an election cycle.

This would definitely get rid of the menace of the extremely-low-info voters who "vote Democrat because our family has always voted Democrat."

They have absolutely no idea they're now voting for communists and fascists.

At the local level we have non partisan elections for school board, city council, mayor, etc.

It’s a disaster.

You end up with a bunch of liberals running these ‘supposedly’ non partisan positions. In my locality we’re rectifying the situation by running conservative candidates for these races.

I think many people would vote on known candidates and leave the candidates for the more obscure offices blank.

Most people would then vote for the first name on the ballot or the guy with the cool name.

Average people can’t study every single candidate on ballots.

Do I know exactly the candidates running for Family Court Judge or for our newly changed and revised state legislative istrict?

NO - so I will vote Party line.

Agreed, unless I have real heartache over a candidate, I’ll vote party line as well. And often, when no party listed and not obvious (and I try to check before going to vote IN PERSON), I’ll pick anyone but the incumbent.

I live in the Bluest of towns. If a conservative wanted to get elected they’d have to register Democrat. The typical voter here selects the top box Democrat and that’s it. I expect it’s that way in a lot of places.

I can’t see a downside to just randomly listing the names with no affiliation. It would require boots on the ground to get your name out and perhaps people would vote issues instead of party.

It would be interesting. Also interesting if beside each name on the ballot instead of the R or D or I was a 50 word paragraph written by the candidate summarizing his/her political views. Nothing else.

I will never ever vote for a democrat. John Kerry called Vietnam veterans war criminals and baby killers and got my neighbors calling ma a baby killer. That was just the start.
