Eight Texas high school students are hospitalized after they were forced to perform 400 push-ups in an hour without water breaks as punishment by their coach

Eight high school students in Texas have been hospitalized after their football coach forced them to do 400 push-ups in an hour without any breaks.

Rockwall-Heath High School Head Football Coach, John Harrell, has been put on administrative leave after he reportedly forced students to do 300 to 400 push-ups during an eighth-period athletic class on Friday.

A mother, who did not want to be identified, claimed the football players were forced to do the intense workout without water breaks, according to Fox 4 News.

She said her son was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis - the breakdown of muscle tissue that can release damaging proteins into the bloodstream, which can cause kidney damage or failure.

It is unclear what the other seven students were diagnosed with. None of the players' identities have been released.

Principal Todd Bradford addressed the situation on Monday, writing in a letter to student-athlete parents: 'On Monday, January 9, 2023, several parents reported that their student(s) subsequently needed medical attention, and in some cases, hospitalization. Please know the District immediately implemented measures to address the situation and provide support for our students.'

It also advised parents to inform their students to see the trainer if they experience not being able to 'bend or extend your arms, unable to lift arms above your head, dark urine (tea or cola-colored), and sharp arm pain,' as well as, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, or lethargy.

'Student safety is a top priority for Rockwall IDS and we will continue to take immediate and appropriate measures in the best interests of our students as we address this situation,' the letter said.

The Dallas-based school has also launched a third-party investigation into the incident and said students who attended the class on Monday did a light, nonstrenuous workout.

Too many pussy comments on this thread.
I’m with you, tomorrow I turn 69 and can push over 500 in my circuit cycle sets in an hour.
And that’s in 80 plus degree temps.

I suspect it went to court. Happen a couple years ago. Coach must have watched BUD training video. Only thing is during BUD trading they have 8 men on a log with training officers next to them during use of them.

It’s much tougher in China where you have to catch the log.

At the start of covid lock downs, well past my prime, I had a decent number of pushups mixed in with other things in a half-hour morning routine. No where near 400. Otherwise, when I was in the best shape I was either putting in long days of physical labor or working out with weight machines.

The article, once one gets past the headline, becomes unclear whether it was 300 or 400, but seems quite clear that they had an hour.

If the players are used to doing reps of 20, that would be 15-20 reps; if 10, 30-40. Our football players would at times be practicing and/or working out twice a day, and they weren’t short practices. It’s only been a couple months since football season, and I think Texas takes football more seriously than Oregon.

I don’t think I could have done it at any point—but I was on the debate team (which didn’t stop me from pulling on dry-chain as a way to fund my way through university). I would have guessed that, given an hour, the football player could have.

Some of the posters are making at least plausible arguments for the other side. Your experience doesn’t closely enough parallel what was asked in my mind to do so,

Tried to find article could only find a case where coach had 8 guys carry a 12 ft long log with diameter of a utility pole. Same results.

I walked past a Lance Corporal out on a lawn, all by himself, doing flutter kicks as I walked towards him form a distance away. He never stopped.
I said “what the hell are you doing?”

He said “Well Staff Sergeant, what some people call candor, others call a smart mouth”.

And god, that USMC fat body platoon in boot camp. See those guys, then see em 3 or 4 weeks later and they looked like they had just come out of a death camp. Unreal how fast they lost weight.

Refused? You sure wouldn’t have played football in Texas back in the day... the coach was close to the Captain of a ship.

“Hope someone’s mom bitch slaps him for this.”

That always enhances the reputation a high school football player wants... for his mommy to come slap the coach to protect baby darling.

“Why were they sent to the hospital? To gain evidence to back up the abuse claims of someone supporting the matriarchy”

Exactly. The mommies all started the phone lines burning with each other and rushed their babies to the hospital to have their tired arms carefully checked.

A water break, in an hour? In January?

No reasonably fit teen is going to need hydration in an hour of physical activity.

But you see, I know that because i was a high school athlete before the idiotic trend of carrying a water bottle around 24/7, and parents feeding their toddlers snacks on those tortuous couple of hours of errands done during the day.

When I was a kid, and got home from school at 3, and on the rare times I told my Mom, "I'm hungry," she said, "Good, dinner's in 3 hours."

You know what else we didn't have when I was growing up? Morbidly obese 8 year-olds.

Yeah, that's right, my glory days 40 years ago playing varsity basketball and lacrosse for state champion programs.

Never ended up in the hospital from exertion. We had 2-3 hour practices, with a quick water break halfway through. Only got Gatorade during games.

“”No reasonably fit teen is going to need hydration in an hour of physical activity.””

In reality, this guy caused 8 teens to end up in the hospital, describing ourselves, or our sports days in the 1960s or our days in the Army might be fun, but obviously, this guy isn’t qualified for this work.

That is awesome! It takes me about an hour to do my 600 pushups every day. getting older is hard, but it is amazing what the old body can do, if you have the right mindset.
pushups changed my life. I lost 40 pounds and have a better physique then when I was a kid. I wear my belt from the 70s now and have a much better mental attitude.
Keep up the good work!
