Actually the “confrontation” bit may be what saves him. You’re not allowed (in DC at least) to go shoot someone just because they’re breaking into your car. But if he confronted them about that, and then they attacked him, he would be allowed to defend himself.

I agree. Three on one is disparity of force that justifies shooting if he felt sufficiently at risk. It ceased being about an attempted car theft once the altercation began, and I doubt the car owner initiated it.
